“Medeco has led the security industry in innovation and quality for decades,” said Tom Kaika, president Medeco, High Security and Aftermarket Group. “Now, through sustainability, we are committed to attaining the highest level of transparency to reflect continuous environmental improvement, and that is becoming increasingly important to facility owners, end-users and the green building industry.”
An Environmental Product Declaration is a standardized way of quantifying the environmental impact of a product or system throughout its life cycle. Declarations include information on the environmental impact of raw material acquisition, energy use and efficiency, content of materials and chemical substances, emissions to air, soil and water and waste generation. Product and company information is also included. An EPD is created in accordance with standards developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
The value of developing an EPD ranges from promoting transparency to the public to earning business from customers that are concerned about the environment. Many of Medeco’s customers need to match the requirements necessary to obtain green building certification, such as LEED. EPDs contribute to earning points in LEED v4 and offer beneficial third-party validation in Medeco’s sustainability claims.
“Medeco has been focused on implementing green solutions from the manufacturing side for several years now,” said Amanda Troise, Medeco Mechanical Product Line Manager and key implementer of Medeco’s sustainability plan. “We’re excited that Medeco now has a total of nine products with an EPD and more declarations are in the works. EPDs are significant because the demand for green construction using sustainable products has increased dramatically.”
Products made in Medeco’s Salem, Va. manufacturing facility utilize recycled and regional materials, while the plant itself has reduced impacts including its carbon footprint, energy consumption, and water use. Last year, ten Medeco products also earned the Certified Environmental Facts (CEF) multi-attribute certification from GreenCircle Certified, LLC, the leading certifier of sustainability claims in products and operations.
