Medeco Sustainability Plan Exceeds Expectations

Salem, Va. (September 20, 2015) Medeco® Security Locks, a high security product manufacturer and ASSA ABLOY Group company located in Salem, Va., has exceeded its first-year sustainability goals by earning GreenCircle certifications for its locking systems and an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its M3 CLIQ mortise cylinder, with more EPDs to follow.

Products made in Medeco’s factory utilize recycled and regional materials, while the plant itself has made significant strides to reduce its carbon footprint, energy consumption, and water use.  “Once Medeco made the commitment to sustainability, we implemented green solutions on the manufacturing side that had an immediate impact,” says Amanda Troise, Medeco Mechanical Product Line Manager and key implementer of Medeco’s sustainability plan. “It’s exciting to see the positive effects—not only in how we’re minimizing our environmental impact, but also because GreenCircle’s third-party certifications help satisfy our customers’ demands for transparency.”

The Medeco products earning the Certified Environmental Facts (CEF) multi-attribute certification from GreenCircle Certified, LLC, the leading certifier of sustainability claims in products and operations, are: Medeco3 Mortise, Medeco3 KIK, Medeco3 Mechanical Key, Medeco X4, M3 CLIQ, M3 CLIQ KIK, M3 CLIQ Key, Medeco XT Mortise, and Arrow Pointe SFIC .

Medeco’s certifications are part of the Department of Defense’s Multi-Attribute Label Pilot Program, which is designed to help institutional purchasers from federal agencies meet sustainable procurement mandates including the new Executive Order 13693. “Tasked with meeting sustainable procurement requirements in the short term, while also working to meet long-term objectives, these federal agencies are turning to third-party multi-attribute certifications,” says Annie Bevan, GreenCircle’s Certification and Operations Manager.

“Medeco locks protect U.S. government and military installations, both here and abroad,” adds Troise. “Sustainability continues to be a key component in federal purchasing decisions, and GreenCircle certification reinforces our position as an ideal supplier. As one of our key markets, this certification is an invaluable tool in communicating our sustainability success to government agencies as well as other green builders.”

Medeco is also developing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its product lines and recently published an EPD for its M3 CLIQ mortise cylinder. An EPD is a standardized way of quantifying the environmental impact of a product or system throughout its life cycle. Declarations include information on energy use and efficiency to raw material acquisition and waste generation.  An EPD is created in accordance with standards developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

An added value for green builders using Medeco products with third-party certifications and EPDs is the opportunity to receive LEED v4 project credits under the materials and resources category.
