Medeco Achieves Certification to ISO 14001:2004
High Security Lock Manufacturer Joins Global Elite

Salem, Va. (April 20, 2016) Medeco® Security Locks, an ASSA ABLOY Group company, was recently presented with its ISO 14001:2004 certificate from Intertek, affirming that the company’s Salem, Virginia operation adheres to the internationally-recognized standard for environmental management in the design and manufacture of locks and locking systems.

“The impetus for Medeco and its dedicated employees to attain ISO 14001:2004 certification was to improve the company’s global competitiveness,” said Tom Kaika, president of Medeco and ASSA ABLOY Americas High Security and Aftermarket Group. “But it also means we’re now producing better quality products while realizing increases in operational efficiency and productivity.”

“This is a landmark achievement that all of our employees can take pride in accomplishing,” added Amanda Troise, Medeco Mechanical Product Line Manager and key implementer of Medeco’s sustainability plan. “It’s becoming more important than ever to demonstrate how Medeco as an organization is thinking about its environmental impact and we’re doing our best to lead the industry.”

ISO 14000 is a family of standards related to environmental management that exists to help organizations (a) minimize how their operations and processes negatively affect the environment (i.e., cause adverse changes to air, water, or land); (b) comply with applicable laws, regulations, and other environmentally oriented requirements, and (c) continually improve in these areas.  The benefits of obtaining ISO 14001 certification include:

  • Cost savings in waste, recycling and consumption
  • Advantage over competitors
  • Management of environmental risks
  • Compliance with international environmental regulations
  • Demonstrates commitment to improving the environment
  • Shows that a company is responsible and future-focused
  • Can reduce insurance costs
  • Can increase employee engagement in the knowledge that they are working in an environmentally friendly organization
